03 Aug Community Event Brings Police and Community Members Together
On Saturday, July 23rd, Code 3 Association hosted a summer social in Potomac Gardens, a large public-housing complex in Southeast DC, just blocks away from the U.S. Capitol. More than 100 residents ventured out to the community courtyard as local police and pastors served ice cream and popcorn. Face painting was a particularly popular activity among children at the event, and police spent time getting to know local residents and their families.
One elderly resident shared that she is usually afraid to sit in the community’s courtyard area for fear of crime, but the social environment and police presence made the event both safe and enjoyable for all who participated. We know that events such as these do not change police-community relations overnight, but our hope is that through sustained effort and consistent communication, we can promote foster stronger police-community relations throughout the Metropolitan DC area.
